Cities Where People Live the Longest

The median lifespan in the U.S. is 79 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But residents in some cities are living past 80, on average. “If you want to live a long time, the best thing you can do is move to a place where people are verifiably living the longest," says Dan Buettner, founder of Blue Zones, an initiative that works with communities to help set up wellness policies. He’s learned that communities where people live longer tend to incorporate vegetable-rich diets and exercise and are highly social or faith-based. Buettner believes that habits tend to be shared and influenced by other fellow community members, too. Realtor.com®’s research team analyzed county data from across the country to identify where people are living the longest. They culled data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, in Seattle. 1. Summit County, Colo.
